Yazoo Dos Perros

www.yazoobrew.com

Step into the taproom located at the Yazoo Brewery in Nashville, TN and you’ve stepped into a room full of history and nostalgic concern. Yazoo is located in what was once the home of southern automaker Marathon Motor Works. From 1906 to 1914 Marathon was building automobiles from the ground up. As engineering advances taxed the finances of the company it quickly found itself in trouble and soon closed the doors. As the saying goes, “One man’s loss is another man’s gain”.

Enter Linus and Lila Hall, the husband and wife team and founders of Yazoo Brewing now three years strong. Just as Marathon Motor Works produced handcrafted automobiles with emphasis on design and engineering, so goes Yazoo and Linus’ unwavering dedication to producing fine quality beer built from the ground up. He’s a homebrewer’s dream of going pro come to life.

One of my favorite handcrafted Yazoo beers is the Dos Perros Mexican style amber ale. With its deep amber color and malt(y) backbone the Dos Perros begs to be paired with a good meaty burger, steak or hearty barbequed meal. In fact, I remember the first time I drank the Dos Perros I was eating barbeque pork tacos at what can only be described as a local dive full of flavor and smoke: the Brewhouse West on Charlotte Pike in Nashville, TN. I found the clean finish of the Dos Perros to be a quenching wash of malt(y) goodness that cut through the wonderfully lingering fat and spice of my Taco Bell’s wet dream of a meal. Mix in the coleslaw side and it’s creamy, cold, pepper-infused kick, and you have what is the perfect Sunday, Sunday, Sunday (big announcers voice) meal best enjoyed with a local brew.

If you can’t make it to the Brewhouse West be sure you stop in at the Yazoo taproom for a growler of Dos Perros to be served at your next barbeque. Or, just enjoy a pint of beer with the local regulars who call the taproom home for a few hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons. In the meantime, check out the Yazoo movie on their website. It’s a great tribute to local brewing success in Nashville.
